Anxiety Therapist in Chicago, IL
Who knew that when you started googling “anxiety therapist chicago, il” near me that you would find so many! It’s challenging to find one that meets what you’re looking for and how they fit into your busy schedule.
My name is Shirley Khong and I became a therapist because I wanted to create a space for people to heal their minds, hearts, and souls from their life experiences, especially if they do not have safe spaces to share how they really feel. I LOVE to help my clients acknowledge and use their inner potential to create positive change in their lives and in their relationships with others.
I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy, with specialized training in Psychodynamic therapy. I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals and couples, helping them navigate anxiety, relationship transitions, and intergenerational trauma with care and support.
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can slow down, reflect, and be heard without interruption. Together, we’ll explore your thoughts, set boundaries, and work toward meaningful change at your own pace.

Anxiety Therapy for Individuals
In my experience as a therapist, I've come to realize that you can't teach others lessons unless you've lived them yourself. This belief shapes my approach to therapy, as I draw from my own journey to empathize with clients. By sharing my insights, I create a space where clients feel understood and supported in their struggles. Together, we explore their emotions and experiences, fostering genuine growth and healing. I believe that true transformation comes from both personal experience and compassionate guidance.

Intergenerational Trauma
Growing up in an immigrant household, I witnessed how harmful communication patterns, beliefs, and behaviors can be passed down through generations. Many of us strive to differentiate ourselves from these patterns to prevent them from affecting our own children. Taking time for self-reflection and awareness isn't selfish; it's an act of self-compassion. By doing so, we can choose to pass on family heirlooms of love and resilience rather than the burdens of family trauma.

Couples Counseling
Throughout my career as a therapist, I've worked with couples from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and sexual orientations. Each couple's challenges are unique, so there's no one-size-fits-all approach. My role is to help partners slow down, become aware of how they feel, and notice both spoken and unspoken communication. By developing this awareness, couples can then commit to making changes that enhance communication and rebuild trust in their relationship.
What to expect from therapy
Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Every person comes in with different needs, hopes, and goals.
What works for one person might not work for another—and that’s okay. I truly believe that finding the right fit makes all the difference. When you feel safe, heard, and supported, it’s easier to build the confidence needed to create the changes you’re looking for.
How sessions flow
Checking In
At the start of each session (unless it’s our first one), I’ll ask:
“Anything you’re still thinking about from our last meeting?”
“Any feelings that came up since we last talked?”
“What would feel helpful for us to focus on today?”
This gives us a clear direction while leaving room for whatever feels most pressing.
Exploring Together
As we talk, I’ll often share reflections or gentle feedback based on what I’m hearing. If we touch on sensitive topics, I might ask:
“What’s coming up for you as we talk about this?”
This helps us stay grounded and ensures that you feel supported—not overwhelmed—as we navigate difficult moments.
Wrapping Up
Before we end, I’ll check in again:
“Were there any topics you wanted to discuss that we didn’t get to?”
“How was our session for you today?”
These questions give you space to share anything left unsaid and help me better support you moving forward.
How Often Should We Meet?
I typically meet with clients weekly. This rhythm allows us to build momentum, explore patterns, and work through challenges as they come up. Once you feel ready to adjust the frequency—whether that’s biweekly, monthly, or even wrapping up therapy—we’ll talk about what works best for your current situation.
Details about me:
I am the first-born from a Chinese and Vietnamese immigrant family living in Chicago, IL
I'm a passionate amateur chef and baker who loves experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.
I’m a life-long learner and always collecting and reading new books about finances, psychology, etc.
I love learning new languages and watching international tv shows or movies, especially Korean dramas.
I enjoy building Legos, including the two in my background setting (i.e., The Great Wave and Disney castle)!
If you would have met me growing up, I was usually the kid who was sitting inside drawing, reading, or watching tv.
My self-compassion practices include: having my own therapist, learning how to garden, being with nature (i.e., hiking, biking, rollerblading, etc.), weightlifting (I try for 2-3x a week), and engaging in daily yoga practices. To be honest, I forget some days when stress and anxiety gets the best of me, but it’s a work in progress.
